Read these sentences from the story. Notice the highlighted parts.
• Shanti’s father fell sick.
• Chachi ji’s face looked sharp as a knife.
• She took the biscuit and put it in Mamta’s hand.
• Shanti’s hands flew even faster.
When we want to show that something belongs to somebody or something, we usually add an
apostrophe + s (’s) to a singular noun. It is used with nouns referring to people, groups of people,
countries, and animals.
In the first sentence, ‘Shanti’s father’ means – the father of Shanti.
In the second sentence, ‘Chachi ji’s face’ means – the face of Chachi ji.
In the third sentence, ‘Mamta’s hand’ means – the hand of Mamta.
In the fourth sentence, ‘Shanti’s hands’ means – the hands of Shanti.
But, it is better to say: Shanti’s father, Chachi ji’s face, Mamta’s hand and Shanti’s hands.
