Time to study language
We have learnt about subjects and objects. A subject is the person, animal or thing performing
an action and an object is someone or something receiving the action. For example,
• We kept our books on the platform.
(subject) (verb) (object)
• Raman Nair brought a glass of cold water.
(subject) (verb) (object)
• I saw my mother standing at the gate.
(subject) (verb) (object)
In these sentences, the verbs require objects to complete the meaning of the sentences. Such
verbs are called transitive verbs.
Now, read these sentences.
• Father laughed aloud.
• The second bell rang.
• Gopal was writing.
• The trees are swaying in the breeze.
• Please listen.
In these sentences, the verbs do not have objects to complete the meaning of the sentences. Such
verbs are called intransitive verbs.
Read these sentences and add objects to the ones that need them. Cross the blanks that
do not require an object.
