                                               Time to study language

You have learnt that a phrase is a group of words that conveys some sense but does not contain a

          subject or a verb.
Depending on the construction and its function in a sentence, phrases can be categorised into

          four kinds.

          • noun phrases • adjective phrases
          • adverb phrases • verb phrases

Let us study more about them.

Noun phrase: It consists of a noun, which is called the head, and a few dependent words before
or after the head. For example,

          • She reminded me of my large-hearted grandmother.

          • The district of South Canara in Karnataka is very different from any other.

Adjective phrase: It is a group of words that modifies nouns or pronouns in a sentence. It
usually contains an adjective, an adverb and/or a preposition. For example,

          • He had been caught up in some important work and not been able to attend the function.

          • Aithappa could retire to this godforsaken sleepy village.

                                                                                                                23
