Let’s do the activity
Let’s learn to grow garlic in pots.
experiential learning
You will need
potting soil
some terracotta pots (12” wide)
some hay or coir
a spade
some stones
spraying can
water
How to proceed
Spread the stones on the drainage hole of the pot. Then fill two-thirds of the pot
with potting soil. If you can’t get potting soil, you can mix equal quantities of garden
soil, compost and sand to make your potting mix. Garlic needs good drainage, or it
will rot.
Take a garlic bulb and separate the cloves. Be careful to keep the papery wrapper
around each clove intact.
Gently press each clove into the soil. Plant the garlic 2 inches in from the rim of the
pot and at least 5 inches apart from each other.
Cover the cloves with more soil. Then, gently spray water on the soil and cover the
pot with hay.
Keep the pot in a well-ventilated area.
Water lightly every morning.
Soon, the garlic will sprout. You can trim the greens when they are around four
inches or taller.
To get full bulbs of garlic, you may have to transplant it outdoors.
Once you are successful, bring the pot to class and show your classmates and teacher.
You could also click a picture and show to everyone.
