11 Paragraph Writing
A paragraph is a short piece of writing that consists of a number of sentences written
on one topic or one idea. These sentences are arranged in a systematic manner. A
paragraph is like a short composition.
Features of a good paragraph:
• Unity: A paragraph should deal with only one thought or idea. The theme should
be presented right at the beginning of the paragraph.
• Order: The sentences in a paragraph should be well connected and organised
according to order of importance.
• Coherence: Sentences within a paragraph need to connect to each other and work
together as a whole.
• Completeness: All sentences should clearly and sufficiently support the main idea.
Parts of a paragraph
• Introductory sentence: It summarises the main idea of the paragraph.
• Supporting sentences: These sentences give the most relevant details.
• Concluding sentence: It summarises the paragraph and emphasizes the main idea.
Here is a sample paragraph.
What is your favourite day of the week and why?
Sunday is my favourite day because I spend the day watching football with my dad.
On Sunday, unlike the other days of the week when he works, my dad spends the
whole day with me watching football on TV. We even eat lunch together while
watching. Dad and I get so excited, we yell and cheer together. On Sundays, I get to
combine watching my favourite sport and spending time with my favourite person—
what a great day!
Write a paragraph on:
1. My favourite person
2. Man’s best friend
3. Global warming
