4 Article Writing

What is the purpose of writing articles?

Articles are written—
1. to present information on a variety of themes (describing an event, person and
her/his life and actions, places, experiences, opinions, on topics of social interest,
arguments for or against a topic, etc.) in a long and sustained piece of writing.

2. to pass on such information in a wide range of contexts (magazine— general/
school, newspaper, etc.).

An article should—
1. have an eye-catching title or headline

2. have a byline

y Content (clear, accurate and balanced)
3. contain paragraphs that

y introduce the theme.

y bring out the cause-effect relationship.

y offer suggestions, personal observations, predictions.
4. have original ideas

5. have a logical arrangement of ideas

6. use a CODER:

y Collection of ideas
y Organising ideas

y Drafting the writing task
y Editing the writing task

y Revising the writing task
