Factory fire forces evacuation of hundreds of homes
Delhi, 7 August 2014:
A major fire at a factory in Karol Bagh (Delhi) has forced the evacuation of
more than 50 shops in the market. Shopkeepers reported the blaze at the
Central Packaging Centre in Karol Bagh, which houses several businesses, at
about 11:15 IST. Police have evacuated people from the market area and the
homes in four nearby streets. The factory is next to a petrol pump; hence the
situation became very grave.
Witnesses reported seeing a plume of smoke above the building, and soon the
whole building was engulfed in flames. A huge amount of packaging material
has been reduced to ashes. The Karol Bagh Police said they did not believe
anyone had been injured. Mr Mahesh Chaube, the Station Officer, said it was
a ‘rapidly developing fire’ which was still being tackled but was now under
control.
