10. Rikki-tikki-tavi
The Jungle Book was published in 1894. It is a
collection of stories written by journalist, short-
story writer, poet and novelist Rudyard Kipling.
Stories were published in magazines within
1893 and 1894, each one followed with original
illustrations, some of which were made by the
author’s father. The stories are set in a forest in
India; one place mentioned repeatedly is ‘Seonee’
(Seoni), in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
The Jungle Book is about a boy named Mowgli
who got lost in a jungle when he was just a
little boy. A family of wolves finds him and the
Mother Wolf decides to bring the boy into her
‘little frog’.
He becomes part of the wolf pack, and Baloo, the
old bear, and Bagheera, the panther, teach him
the Law of the Jungle. However, Shere Khan, the
tiger, doesn’t like having a child who will become
a man living in the jungle, and wants to kill him.
As Mowgli gets older, he is in great danger from
Shere Khan. The animals advise him to go and
live with humans. So, he goes to a village where
he is adopted by a family. But Shere Khan finds
him. This time Mowgli kills Shere Khan. But the
villagers are now afraid of Mowgli, so they chase
him away and he returns to live in the jungle.
Most of the characters are animals such as Shere
Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a
principal character is the boy or ‘man-cub’
Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves.

with an unusually big head, round eyes, scrawny
