Mr Button: What makes you think you’re having a birthday surprise?

Betsy: Because I always do. Are you hiding it?

Mrs Button: You’ll just have to wait and see.

Betsy: But I can’t wait any longer. Today is my birthday.

Mr Button: You heard what your mother said. Wait and see! (Rises, and takes his

cup and saucer) Goodbye, Betsy. I must go to work.

Mrs Button (Rising, taking her cup and saucer): I must go to the store.

Both: Be a good girl, Betsy.

Betsy: Won’t you please tell me where my birthday surprise is?

Mr and Mrs Button: Wait and see, Betsy. You just wait and see. (They exit,
          leaving the table clear.)

Betsy (stamping her foot): No! No! No! I will not wait and see! I will go look for
it myself. (As Betsy exits right, six children enter left. Each child carries a gaily
          wrapped package.)

Children: Betsy Button has a birthday!

We know all about it! Do you find Let’s connect

No, we will never shout it! Betsy?

Here are her presents. We are going to hide them!

(The children hide presents about the stage. When all are hidden, Mary speaks.)

Mary: I wonder where Betsy is.

Tommy: I’ll bet she’s gone to look for her birthday surprise.

Susie: She’ll look in the cellar

          And back of each door.

          She’ll look in the pantry,

          And then look some more.
