                                               Time to study language

You have learnt in an earlier class that nouns are of different kinds, for example, proper,
common and collective nouns. Let us revise them quickly.

Proper nouns are the special names of people, things or places, such as, Betsy, Mrs
          Button, Tommy, Mary.

Common nouns are the general names of people, animals, things and places, such as,
          gift, fairy, cupboard, cupcake, candle.

Collective nouns are the names for a collection of people, animals or things, like troop,

          herd, fleet, swarm, flock.

Read these sentences and notice the highlighted words.

          • They planned a surprise for Betsy.

          • There was a lot of happiness in the end.

The highlighted words in these sentences represent a quality, idea, or feeling that cannot
be seen or touched. Such nouns are called abstract nouns.
