7 Dialogue Writing

A dialogue is a story that is conveyed through speech by two or more characters.
A dialogue helps in the advancement of a plot and also helps the readers in
understanding the personality of the characters. It provides a break to the author
from giving elaborate explanations about the plot of the story and the characters.

             While writing a dialogue, remember:
             • to use contractions
             • sentences may not be grammatically correct
             • choice of words should tell about the personality of the characters

Now, read this conversation between three brothers and a monster.
Big Billy Goat Gruff: Brothers, I am going to the other side of the lake.

Bigger Billy Goat Gruff: I can see tall, green grass there.

Biggest Billy Goat Gruff: How will you cross the lake?
Big Billy Goat Gruff: I will go over the bridge.

Biggest Billy Goat Gruff: Do not go there. Under the bridge lives a huge monster.

Big Billy Goat Gruff: My dear brothers, let me try to cross it.

(Big Billy Goat Gruff walks over the bridge.)
Monster: Who’s that walking over my bridge?

Big Billy Goat Gruff: I’m Big Billy Goat.

             Monster: I’ll eat you!
Big Billy Goat Gruff: But I’m too small. Wait for my brother who is much bigger.

Monster: All right, you walk away.

(A while later, Bigger Billy Goat Gruff walked across the bridge.)

Monster: Who’s that walking across my bridge?
Bigger Billy Goat Gruff: It’s me, Bigger Billy Goat Gruff.

Monster: I will gobble you for my lunch!
